A COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) is a consortium of non‐profit, community-based, and faith‐based organizations whose goal is to facilitate service to those imperiled, impaired, or impacted by local disaster. A COAD works to improve resource sharing and communication, and to eliminate duplication of efforts in all phases of disaster preparedness and emergency management.
At our kick-off meeting on December 4th, we learned about the function of a COAD and why Western Nevada County needs one. We also began the process of identifying what our community needs before, during, and after a disaster, and which organizations have resources or services that could be useful.
Meeting #2 on January 15th will provide insight into what happens on the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) side during a disaster, with a tour of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and an overview of the different EOC roles. We will also talk more about how non-profits, community-based organizations, and faith-based organization might work together and with OES in a disaster.
